Carrots, Eggs, & Coffee

I got this message today, and I LOVE it! I thought I’d pass it along to everyone I know.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up, She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her daughter, she asked, ‘Tell me what you see.’ ‘Carrots, eggs, and coffee,’ she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg. Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma.

The daughter then asked, ‘What does it mean, mother?’

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.
The ground coffee be ans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

‘Which are you?’ she asked her daughter. ‘When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean? May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

I am sending this to people who mean something to me: to those who have touched my life in one way or another; to those who make me smile when I really need it; to those who make me see the brighter side of things when I am really down; to those whose friendships I appreciate; to those who are so meaningful in my life.

May we all be coffee!

Tweet! Tweet!

My parents are the local soup kitchen for the wintering birds, and they have several (probably 6 at least) feeders around their house. I think they have to fill a couple of the feeders as often as every other day because there are so many birds! These, by far, are not the best bird pictures I’ve ever taken, but they’re pretty birds, so I’m going to post them anyway. House Finches (the yellow-ish gold ones) and Red Breasted Finches (the red-headed ones (I know, duh!)).

Have a wonderful week!

****EDITED****
Thank you to my mother, Donna, who reminded me of their real names . . . .

“Ahhhh…Amy. Earth to Amy. What did your mommy tell you about the birds? The “GOLDISH YELLOW ONES” are GOLDFINCHES…the ones with the red heads and chests are house finches. As for Red Breasted Finches, I think the bird guide authors would like to speak to you. You may have just discovered a new species. Let me think . . . “finchius amyii” ?”

Life in Cove

Relaxed. Laid Back. Fun. Diverse. Crazy. Chaotic. Yummy. Adventurous. Intriguing. Funny. Entertaining. Crazy. Peaceful. Loving.

The girls played computer games, did puzzles with Papa, played with their cousins, went to the park, baked, and ate – a lot. We had a great weekend!

Over the hill and through the woods . . .

To Nana’s house we go (Papa’s, too).

Friday, the girls and I loaded up and headed to my parents house in Cove. Aaron wasn’t able to make it this time, so we made a girls weekend out of the trip. The girls were so excited! They really haven’t gotten to see either of my parents much since August, and Emma hadn’t seen them since probably July.

On the way out of Irrigon, Reagan asked me to take the way where “you don’t have to go ovah the mountain”. When I told her that no matter which route we took, that we would have to go over at least one mountain, she was really mad! She didn’t want to go over the mountains because “we might fall off, mom!”

So, when you’re mad at Mom and you don’t want her to look at you, this is what you do. Falling asleep like that is a complete accident, of course.

My sister and her kids came over for a visit Friday afternoon, which was great, and the kids all had a blast playing together. I don’t even think we had to settle any arguments which was a very nice, unusual surprise.

That evening, the girls & I went into LaGrande for the Christmas light parade with Nana & Papa. It was C~O~L~D! Like 26 degrees cold! It was fun, and the girls had a good time gathering candy, drinking hot cocoa, and watching for Santa.

They look like little colored marshmellows in their coats!

Daughters Gone Wild!

Tuesday I left work at noon, drove to Union, picked up my baby sister, and we headed off to the Big City together. Erika’s husband, Scotty, had won concert tickets, but he wasn’t able to go because he had to work, so she invited me. The concert was Evanescence, a group I really like, and we were looking forward to spending some time together (we are rarely together without at least one kid attached). Our mom & dad teased us about making sure we behaved ourselves & didn’t show up on any of those Girls Gone Wild videos.

I took Aaron’s camera adn we planned on taking some fun pictures during the concert. Apparently, you’re not supposed to take any recording equipment into a concert (dumb me), but I didn’t want to walk FOREVER back to where we were parked. I shoved the camera down the front of my pants – hidden discretely behind my huge rhinestone belt buckle. :-) The pictures I took were okay, but not great. They’ll work for the scrapbook pages, though. I also got some video clips – mostly just to record the music.

So . . . the first band was called Julien-K. Neither of us had heard of them, and they were pretty decent, but not my favorite type of music. The second band . . . they were called SickPuppies. That should have been our first clue. Um, yeah, they were so so so NOT OUR STYLE, but their set was short and we survived.

And just a few fun pictures. Believe it or not, we COMPLETELY forgot to get any pictures of the two of us, but that’s ok.

After the concert, we searched and searched and searched for a restaurant that was still open. TGIFridays happened to be still open, and neither of us had ever eaten there, so that’s where we went. It was great food, and the conversation was even better! Between the two of us, we have made it our personal mission to figure out how to make the Fried Macaroni (yeah, I know, not health) we had. It was PHENOMINAL!

Me being the photo-freak I am had to take a picture of it:

After dinner, we headed home. I dropped Erika off at her house in Union, then mosied over to my parents’ house in Cove to spend the night. After a mere 5 hours of sleep, a shower, and a great breakfast courtesy of Mom & Dad, I headed to work.

The pass over Meacham was BEAUTIFUL, and the snow was gorgeous:

I made it back to work completely exhausted, but thrilled to have had that time with Erika. I also figured out that I had driven 668.2 miles in less than 20 hours, and then I had to drive an additional 100 to pick up Emma from her dad’s house.

Anyway, it was a GREAT adventure, and we had a blast! And Dad, you don’t have to worry, I don’t think that man with the video camera caught us doing anything *too* naughty! :-)

Mom, wook!

Reagan: “Mommy, wook at my woose tooth, its awmost weady!”

Mom: “Oh, Reagan, it’s bleeding a little, go get some toilet paper to hold on it, then I’ll look again.”

Reagan comes back blotting up the tiny bit of blood around the tooth.

Mom: “Ok, let me see this now . . . I’ll just wipe your tooth a little.”

At which point, I just squeezed a little and yanked out her tooth.

Mom: “Look what I have in my hand, Reagan.”

Reagan: “Howy cow! I wost my first tooth!! Aawon, wook, Mom has my tooth!”

It’s the first one she’s lost the “normal” way. Three years ago when she was 2, she was playing in the babysitters playhouse and decided she was going to haul a bucket of rocks into the playhouse by dragging it up and over the rail with a piece of rope. She started losing her grip on the rope and tried to hold it with her teeth while she got a better grip on the rope. Luckily, our babysitter actually found the tooth. The permanent tooth to replace it still hasn’t grown in.

She’s so excited she finally lost a tooth! We tried to get some pictures of it, but since it was on the bottom, we had a little trouble as you can see from the funny face pictures.

She’s a happy girl ~ she’s been working on the tooth off and on for over two weeks!

The "Real" Me

I am tired of maintaining blonde. It takes too much time. It is expensive. It looks great for a little bit, but then starts looking not so great. Time to not worry about my roots, hair maintenance, and whether or not I acutally have time to take care of it.

I’m back to the “real” me. My girlfriend, Yvette (who is also my stylist), and I were hanging out last Sunday watching football, and we just went for it. I cut about 5 inches total off the back – I can’t believe my hair was actually that long! And we colored my hair back to it’s natural – dark brown. It was a little shocking at first, but I love it! I love not feeling all that unhealthy junk at the ends, I love that it’s easy to fix, and I love that my girlies all said, “oh, Mom, you look so much prettier now!”

In doing so, I have simplified one aspect of my life. I am on a mission to simplify my whole life.

So, here’s the real me:

Tomorrow its back to the grind of the work-week, and after the long weekend, I am looking forward to it.

As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.
Henry David Thoreau

Majestic

I was at the marina today to take Senior pictures and this beauty was sitting in a low branch of one of the trees. He was so close and just let us get really close to him. It was awesome!
