LARP Waist Quiver & Belt

Quiver-01

The LARP we participate in utilizes foam “boffing” weapons instead of realistic looking foam weapons, which means none of our weapons can have the potential to hurt, scrape, maim, or otherwise damage anyone else.  Because of that, my quivers have to be made from soft material – in this case, I use EVA foam.  Since I already have a back quiver, I just followed the same process to make this one.  After I finished shaping it, I added thin foam accent pieces on the top and bottom edges and the turtle in the center.  Just like my original quiver, I used Plutonium Spray Paint to paint the foam a nice, rich brown color (the foam was originally black and gray)!  The paint dried very quickly, and left a beautiful, smooth finish!  Once the brown dried, I painted the accent turtle and the base of the quiver red.

I took the time to label the different elements hanging from the belt of the quiver.  Hopefully this helps with understanding how I keep track of myself throughout the event.

This picture is just a really good example of how the quiver is worn.

Overall I am really happy with how this quiver turned out; however, after being at our event all weekend, I noticed several “design flaws” that I need to correct before the event in August.

This project is my eleventh finish out of many I have on My Finish-A-Long Quarter 2 Project List.

Making a Medieval Inspired LARP Dress

Making a Medieval Inspired LARP Dress

Todd and I participate in a LARP Group, Sojourn, that holds two events each year, and I have written about it several times (use the LARP tag in the right-hand sidebar to view all the posts).  Our events are immersive story-line based, involve sub-plots, quests, fighting – lots of fighting, and social settings (meals, pub games, etc.).

We have never had a portion of the event that is classified as “formal” – until this year.  At the beginning of March, one of the Game Masters announced in our Facebook Group that there may be an opportunity to wear in-game formal clothing during the first camp of the year.

I think I may have squealed out loud!

I mean, who doesn’t want the opportunity to wear an amazing formal costume that you wouldn’t get to wear any other time of the year?

Hand Beading – April’s Try Something New Every Month Project

TSNEM_AprilCover

I ran across Stephanie’s and Rebecca’s co-hosted project, Try Something New Every Month (TSNEM) for 2016, in December, and I decided to participate because there are a lot of sewing techniques I have never tried and would like to.  You can read my original post talking about the project HERE, and the post that lists what projects I’m going to try each month HERE.

Last  month my TSNEM project was grommets, and I specifically chose last month for that project because they are incredibly easy and even with me being very busy with rehearsals and then shows for My Fair Lady, I was still able to get my project finished.

This month’s project is centered around another LARP costume, my Formalwear Dress and Russian Kokoshnik; however, it is not the dress I will be highlighting, it is the hand beading.  For as much as I hate hand-sewing, I am finding it funny that three of my four projects so far this year have been centered around hand-sewing of one type or another.

Making a Russian Kokoshnik

Kokoshnik-08

Our LARP group is having a “formal” encounter at our first event this year, so I made myself a dress out of plum colored microsuede.  In addition, My Try Something New Every Month project for April is beading embellishment, and I felt like this the dress was the perfect piece to start on.  Once I finished the dress, though, I contacted my friend Rachel who is a photographer and asked her if she would be willing to do a photoshoot in the mountains of me in my dress, and she agreed!

We aren’t able to get together until this coming Sunday, and the dress will have been done for nearly two weeks by then, so I thought I would try my hand at making a headpiece to go with it.  After researching several options, I settled on the Russian Kokoshnik because it could be made relatively easily from materials I already had on hand.

Grommets – March’s Try Something New Every Month Project

I ran across Stephanie’s and Rebecca’s co-hosted project, Try Something New Every Month (TSNEM) for 2016, last year, and I decided to participate because there are a lot of sewing techniques I have never tried and would like to.  You can read my original post talking about the project HERE, and the post that lists what projects I’m going to try each month HERE.

Last  month my TSNEM project was English Paper Piecing, and I found that hand-sewing all those little hexagons was somewhat therapeutic.  It was a project I could work on during My Fair Lady rehearsals, and it helped pass the time.  This month, my project centered around using grommets.  I have never used them before, and since I have quite a few LARP costumes to sew that utilize them, I decided it would be a great idea to add it to my TSNEM list of projects.
